Anneli's Talvikki Dress

For two months we had Anneli here working with us, helping with day-to-day tasks at our office. Sadly, now Anneli has already moved on to other things, but while she was here, she made herself this awesome Talvikki dress hack!

For her dress, she simply added a little length to the hem to achieve the knee-length, and omitted the uneven split hem and sewed the side seams all the way down, with an even hemline.

She also added simple in-seam side pockets, which are a handy detail on such a casual, oversized dress!

The result is super cute and relaxed, perfect for the Finnish cold winters! She used a blueberry-colored boiled wool from Eurokangas. The fabric had a little less stretch than required, so she also added an invisible zipper to the back.

Isn’t her Talvikki absolutely amazing?

Today and tomorrow (december 14th & 15th), the Talvikki pdf pattern is only 6 € (from 10), with this code:

Happy sewing!

I’ve made the same mistake as an earlier respondent. I bought ‘ sweatshirt knit but it isn’t stretchy enough for my head to go through the top. How do you compensate for having to create an extra seam in the back in order to put in an invisible zip? Apart from that its a great and easy pattern.

Hello Victoria! I’m so sorry to hear that your fabric didn’t have enough stretch! Did you sew the sweater complete before noticing the fabric isn’t stretchy enough? I am sure you can still save it by cutting the back and adding the zip 🙂 It’s always wise to check that the stretch percent is as required in the pattern by measuring it yourself before cutting your fabric <3 Best, Laura

Hi! I sewed a Talvikki-Sweater… but I wonder if someone else had the problem that it’s too tight and my head doesn’t fit through I need to add an invisible zipper now as here on the dress.

    1. named says:

Hi Flor! Oh no, what kind of fabric did you use? Or, does your interfacing have enough stretch? Note that the interfacing should have the same amount of stretch as the main fabric (30 %). If the interfacing is the issue, you could also try to take it off and make a new neckline facing with a more stretchy interfacing (or if the facing fabric is sturdy enough, you can omit the interfacing altogether). Maybe this would solve the issue? Let me know if this doesn’t help! – Laura

      1. Flor says:

Hej Laura! Thank you for answering! Sorry about my late reply… Well, I used a common sweat. It doesn’t have that much stretch. I tried one with interfacing, one without, than reducing the front darts, and then with an invisible zipper on the shoulder seam. However, for the next Talvikki I might find a stretchable interface and a more stretchable fabric 😉
